AirMediaPlayer gives Windows users a whiff of Apple AirPlay (video)

We heard it was in development just two days ago and now we’ve got a first glimpse at Apple’s AirPlay media streamer working a Windows PC. The hack comes courtesy of the free AirMediaPlayer client for Windows client (currently at version 1.0.5) that leverages the Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 SP1, Quicktime, and Bonjour for Windows to enable AirPlay media streaming from any iOS device back a XP, Vista, or Windows 7 PC. Possibly good to news for those of you with PC-based media centers. Read more »

Google-Chrome-Cr-48

What does Chrome OS — or any cloud OS — need to do to go mainstream?

I was a little surprised when a Cr-48 — that new Chrome OS laptop Google has been sending people to test — showed up on my doorstep last week. I honestly wasn’t expecting to get one — Ryan got gdgt’s review unit — I just applied for one online like everyone else and kept my fingers crossed. I’ve spent a decent amount of time with it over the past few days (I’m writing this newsletter on it), and so far have some things I like (how easy it is to get setup, how quickly it boots up) and few things I don’t like (the horrible trackpad and how awful fonts look).

VUDU 2.0 interface is live on the PlayStation 3

Just shy of a month after it launched on the PlayStation 3, VUDU has begun delivering its newly revamped interface on the game console. It should be there once the app is opened, but just in case you’re not near a Sixaxis or the (now supported) Move controller check out our gallery for an idea of what the new layout look like. Oh, and if you’re getting your 1080p HDX streaming via a different box or smart TV widget then keep an eye out, the company’s support page say the PS3 and LG devices will be the only ones sporting the new look through January, with all the rest getting it later on.

Sony Ericsson LiveView getting much needed January update

Good news for those early adopters burdened by an underperforming Sony Ericsson’s LiveView: help is on the way. According to the official Sony Ericsson Product Blog, the company will roll out an update via its SE Update Service in January that should address connection issues between the wrist-worn display / remote control and Android phones. Other “minor issues” will be solved with updates to the LiveView Application in the Android Market, though SE isn’t clear on when those might be made available — hopefully soon because we can’t wait for this device to finally achieve its potential.

Sony’s Music Unlimited subscription service ready to stream tunes to PS3s and Bravia TVs in the UK

The UK and Ireland are today the first to get a taste of Sony’s big play for the online music market, the appropriately titled Music Unlimited. This new subscription service (£3.99 a month for Basic access, £9.99 for the Premium stuff) will let you stream a library of about six million songs to your PS3, Bravia telly, or web-connected Blu-ray player, while also offering the option to sync playlists from other music services like iTunes. LG Optimus 2X

LG Optimus 2X Officially Announced

LG’s new dual core offering touts itself to be a world’s first, boasting two 1GHz Tegra 2 processors, for what the firm reckons is “instantaneous touch response,” HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) mirroring and “exceptional graphics performance.” Of course, Nvidia is best known in the PC space for its graphics prowess, and many feel it’s about time this capability made its way to the mobile. Marketplace gets keyword-search added on

Although we prefer AppFinder for searching the Marketplace for new wares, it’s nice to know Microsoft is still tweaking things a lil’ bit on their end. Evidently, in the last 24hrs, Microsoft has added keyword-search to the Marketplace, making it very slightly easier to find apps based on topic as opposed to just searching by title alone. palmPad details leak? Updated x2: Sketches of an HP Slate

FoxNews has uncovered the above sketch detailing the upcoming palmPad, which they say will debut at CES in January. They say there will be four models of the palmPad, all running webOS 2.5.1. They claim that all four will be “a spin-off of the never-released HP Slate.” That latter claim is incorrect, of course, as the Slate was released, albeit in limited form. Read more »

Sony Ericsson Playstation Phone may be called “xPeria Play”???

Here’s the latest speculation and rumor control on the not-so-mythical Sony Ericsson Playstation phone:

First up, SE was granted a European trademark on “Xperia Play” on Dec. 1. At the same time, Swedish PR firm Jung Relations has scooped up XperiaPlay.com, XperiaPlay.net and XperiaPlay.org. So there’s a pretty good bet that’ll end up being a big part of the branding somehow.

Then add on an unsourced rumor from Pocket-Lint, which says the PSP/Xperia/Play/Phone/thingy will be announced at Mobile World Congress in February (no great surprise there) and will hit stores in April in the UK. Read more »
